Once that is complete go to your utility tools and find disk utility. Authorize it and run it and these 2 steps should clean up your Mac. After that go ahead and open excel to see if it is still running slow. If it is still running slow go ahead and use Clean my Mac to delete the excel program.
I need some assistance with Excel files not opening for a user. We have tried multiple files, and they all open Excel to a blue/gray screen. If you go to FileOpen, the file will then load into Excel. This is only for one user. I am able to open the files fine on my device, and other users can open the files also. The other users use a Citrix connection, and have a published desktop.

I did do research on this issue. The fixes that I have seen are all application fixes. I don't think this would be a correct fix, since it is only one user with the issue. The user with the issue is a Citrix user, and I have tested files can open in Citrix, and not on Citrix. Below are fixes that I have found. Click on Start Control Panel folder Options File types. Select XLSX file type extension and click on Advanced.
Highlight Open under actions and click Edit. In the dialog box that appears you need to make two adjustments: 1. Application to perform action: At the end of the line after /e append a space character followed by '%1' (including the quotes) 2.Delete open('%1') from DDE message, rem see command line and from DDE application not running. Close Excel and Windows Start Button Run excel /unregserver then Windows Start Button Run excel /regserver The /unregserver & /regserver stuff resets some of the windows registry to excel's factory defaults.
Check to make sure that.xls opens with Excel. And of course, uninstall and reinstall Office. Thanks to all that read, and any help with this would be great. I think I found the answer.seems to work so far.
I found it at The part that seemed to do the trick was this. In the registry editor (win+r then type regedit) go to the following location: HKEYCLASSESROOT Excel.Sheet.12 shell Open Backup before you change by right clicking on 'Open' and selecting 'export' Either delete or rename 'ddeexec' (renaming to ddeexecOLD or ddeexecBAK helps you remember that you changed something in the registry if you ever have to come back to this location again) Select 'command' then modify the '(Default)' entry by replacing /dde at the end of the string with '%1' (with the quotes and a space before the '%1'). Repeat the above process replacing Excel.Sheet.12 with any/all of the following that are applicable to you:.
Excel.CSV. Excel.Macrosheet. Excel.OpenDocumentSpreadsheet.12. Excel.Sheet.8. Excel.SheetBinaryMacroEnabled.12.
Excel.SheetMacroEnabled.12. Excel.Template. Excel.Template.8. Excel.TemplateMacroEnabled So far double clicking the files causes them to open as they should in Excel 2016. This sounds similar to an issue we were having. When we had both excel 2003 and 2007 installed on the same computer, we could open the excel 2003 files right away but not the 2007 files.
Excel 2007 would open but gray screen. All we had to do was to minimize excel 2007 and it would pop right back up with the file we had just tried to open. Researched indicated that 2007 was always checking to see if it was the default program for excel files and this causes the issue. I found a registry setting to change and the problem was solved. We have migrated those users now to only 2007 so the issue no longer happens. Windows updates would mess with the registry and I would have to reapply the reg patch.

Just want to share my success with solving this issue in case it may help others. I spent 3 hours trying all different advice from a gazillion sites until I tinkered around myself and miraculously fixed it! Description of my instance of the problem is as follows: It happened suddenly - everything was perfect before I created a specific sales report including a chart drawing data from several worksheets within the workbook. Don't know if that had anything to do with it. Thereafter, all workbooks (old or new) which I attempted to open through windows explorer, or frm my desktop or from my email opened excel, but displayed a grey/gray screen where most menu optiones were greyed out as well. What fixed the issue FINALLY was opening a workbook even though it was greyed out, then clicking on Full Screen.
This resulted in a message saying Excel stopped working and will restart itself. After Excel restarted itself the issue was miraculously resolved!!!!! I am still running into the problem for the owners of my company. They click on an excel file (local or shared drive) and Excel Opens to gray screen. They have to go back to the file and single click on it, then back to Excel and the file is displayed. I tried to do the Full Screen View and I set the turned on the 'Ignore other applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE)' and neither worked.
Full screen simply gave me a full screen of gray and Ignore DDE means I wasn't able to open any excel. Does anybody else have any suggestions?
